GoogleNet: the next free wireless network?
The article is a little old, but I think the news are still relevant. If you don't know already, CNN has found that Google is building a huge network across the country. The network is being built using cheap fiber optics bought from telecommunications companies with excess material, typically coming from acquired wireless companies.
The new network, called GoogleNet in the CNN article, would have the high capacity necessary to carry the traffic generated by Google services across the country. Another application for this network, however, would be connecting wireless users in the major metropolitan areas. According to the article, this is just what Google is doing right now, with the help of a small startup called Feeva.
Feeva and Google are developing technology necessary to locate users and deliver ads targeted to specific locations. Now, when this technology will be available is still uncertain, but there is no doubt that Google is working on projects of this type.
